LAN Switching Technologies

Overview

This section gives the information about Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. It explains general networking theory from the CCENT certification and applies it in real world scenarios. It demonstrates configuring individual devices into more complex territory and shows the configuration of numerous devices to create a robust and optimized network.

Understanding VLANs

This section reviews creating and managing multiple vlans on a single switch. It talks about the purpose of vlans and configuring vlans. It explains that vlans are kept not in the startup-config but in the vlan database called vlan.dat in flash. Also It discusses using uplinks when connecting multiple switches together.

Trunking and DTP

This section shows the use of DTP to create trunks between switches automatically. It also discusses some of the peculiarities of DTP modes. It demonstrate how to configure trunking for using 802.1q.

Spanning Tree Protocol

This section covers the basics of STP—Spanning Tree Protocol. It explains when configuring links between switches, it inadvertently cause switching loops. It demonstrate that STP is running by default on cisco switches and discusses the important concept of the root bridge election and decision making process.

Spanning Tree Protocol Optional Features

This section takes a look at additional optional features that can be configured for STP. It explains the use of portfast and bpduguard to make STP work more efficiently. It explores that enabling bpduguard sends a port into err-disabled state if a single bpdu is detected. It also explain how to enable this globally for every port and then how to disable it for the ports needed.

Layer 2 Threat Mitigation

This section discusses Layer 2 attacks and how to use switch functionality to mitigate them. It explains two common attacks on DHCP i.e. DHCP Starvation and Rogue DHCP servers. It shows how to limit the number of the offers a port can and how to implement a trusted port to mitigate this type of layer 2 attack.

Port Aggregation

This section explains the use of port aggregation for increasing bandwidth between switches and providing fault tolerance against port failures.

Routing Technologies

Inter-VLAN Routing

This section reviews CCENT concept of Inter-VLAN Routing. It demonstrates the Router On a stick configuration and discusses why it’s only used in a lab environment instead of production. It also demonstrates the use of a Layer 3 switches to configure the inter-VLAN routing.

Routing Protocols

This section reviews general routing protocol concepts for routing protocol configurations. It explains the scope of routing protocols into IGP and EGP. It covers and breaks down the IGP into two classifications such as Distance vector and Link State protocols. Both IGP determine routes with an autonomous system (AS) based on different metrics.

OSPF

This section takes a look at the specifications when working with OSPF as our IGP. It show how ospf works with multiple areas and even describe how it calculates its metric to make routing decisions. It also demonstrates how the spf algorithm functions to determine the cost.

Implementing OSPFv2

This section covers configuring ospf on multiple routers. With OSPF configured on three routers, It discusses the different connection states and role types when using the “show ip ospf neighbor” command. It also explains how and why to configure multi-area OSPF.

Implementing OSPFv3

This section introduces OSPFv3, the IPv6 version of OSPF. It discusses the concerns that most ccna candidates will have and show how to overcome them. It also covers configuring the router to support IPv6 routing by using the “IPv6 Unicast-Routing” command.

Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol

This section introduce the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol(EIGRP). It discusses what sets EIGRP apart from the other dynamic routing protocols. It also shows how EIGRP calculates its metric, its auto route summarization, and route selection.

Implementing EIGRP for IPv4

This section demonstrate how to implement the the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol(EIGRP) in an IPv4 environment. It shows the necessary commands, steps to get EIGRP enabled when using IPv4 and how to verify that EIGRP is working properly.

Implementing EIGRP for IPv6

This section demonstrate how you implement the the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol(EIGRP) in an IPv6 environment. It shows the necessary commands, steps to get EIGRP enabled when using IPv6 and how to verify that EIGRP is working properly.

WAN Technologies

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)

This section explores the venerable Point-to-Point Protocol or PPP as a simple WAN protocol solution. It explains the use of PPP and demonstrates how to get PPP configured for a single link from the CLI. At the end it also covers how to get PPP configured for a multi link environment.

Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE)

This section introduces handy little protocol known as Generic Routing Encapsulation(GRE). It shows some of the ways GRE can be useful such as masking network complexity, link failure detection, easy redundant link configuration, and easy firewall configuration.

WAN Connectivity

This section discusses various WAN technologies for the CCNA Routing and Switching exam. It covers the changes in the connectivity types such as company resources moving from internal locations to the cloud and what that means in terms of the connections types. External Border Gateway Protocol

This section covers external services and how it relates to enterprise network architecture.
