Curriculum

Understanding network infrastructures

Overview

MTA validates building-block technology concepts and helps students explore, discover and pursue successful careers in Information Technology (IT) in an exciting and rewarding way! As the first step in the Microsoft Technology Certification Series, this new, entry-level certification provides students with confidence, credibility, and differentiation.

OSI Model

This section explains the basics of computer networks utilizing the OSI and TCP/IP reference models. It covers the differences between the two models, how they are used to standardize networks, and the layers that comprise them.

Understanding IPv4

This section explains IP addressing which is necessary for connecting devices on a network. It covers all the major bases involved in IP addressing such as the addresses themselves, subnet masks, and gateways; what they are and how they are used to connect devices.

Understanding IPv6

This section covers Internet Protocol version 6 or IPv6. It explains how the new version differs from its predecessor as well as ways that they are similar in function. Specific topics covered are the IPv6 address, prefix number, gateway, and backward compatibility with IPv4.

Understanding Name Resolution

This section covers Domain Name Resolution or DNS which enables human language to interact with computers that rely on numbered addresses for communication. It explains how to use DNS to convert the name of a website to the actual IP address instead of needing to remember a myriad of IP addresses ourselves.Understanding Network Services

Understanding Network Services

This section explains two of the most widely used networking services, namely the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol(DHCP) and Remote access. It demonstrates the process of dynamically assigning IP addresses using DHCP services.

Understanding TCP/IP

This section covers some of the different tools and protocols used to help troubleshoot and verify network connectivity such as ping, tracert, ipconfig, DNS, telnet, and Netstat.

Understanding network hardware

Understanding Switches

This section dives into the wonderful world of network switches and how they are used to connect attached devices. It explains the fundamental basics like transmission speeds, ports, and Virtual Local Area Networks.

Understanding Routers

This section explores how to connect networks together using network routers. It explains how a router is able to learn about different networks using Dynamic Routing, or how to set a route manually using Static routes. It also covers the topics of transmission speeds and default routes.

Understanding Media Types

This section describes the different wired and wireless media types used to connect end devices to a network. It covers both copper and fiber cabling including transmission speeds and cable lengths.

Understanding protocols and services

Network Infrastructure

This section explains common computer network and explore the different elements that allow system to communicate. It uses Wireshark to demonstrate the difference between regular network traffic and encrypted network traffic.
